winter walk

Link

It's late and I'm just now taking the dog out. He runs ahead of me eager for our frosty walk together. Glancing up I see the abandoned home of bees. A huge honeycomb dangling from a gutter. I remember those fat bees glowing gold in the summer.

The dog and I make our way up the alley. The concrete is pockmarked and uneven. Tiny pieces of glass glitter underneath the lamp posts. We continue to walk and I step in something. I look down and as if to mock me I see sand. Before I can inspect further the 85 pound dalmation leads me away. The alley is such a fascinating place in the winter time.

Someone threw out an old fish tank and a mirror. Pepe the terrible isn't out tonight. He is the size of a dog cough drop with attitude. On many occassions he has spied me and Cometa and come out of nowhere scaring the crap out of us.

How many times have I walked through this alley and nothing seems to change?

We walk back and I see the small dune of beige sand sniffling in the artic wind. Reminds me of when I would sun myself on a beach in Cancun. I look up at the sky and see a sliver of the new moon. Time to put out our moon jars. Soon the alley will turn into a forest of ice glinting of winter dreams. This evening and tomorrow evening there is supposed to be a meteor shower visible between 10 p.m. - 2 p.m. As we walk in I spot the flickering Christmas ornaments from across the street. On and off, On and off reminding me of a sign in Las Vegas. Fun times in the tundra...

I have been to Chicago only once in the middle of the winter, I went up there to see the Van Gogh/Gaugin exhibit at the Art Institute.

IT IS COLD.

So yes, even the smallest glimpse of anything tropical reminds me of Christmas in Cancun or Acapulco, when all the trees you see with lights and ornaments are Palm Tress, oh they joy.
