Exhibit of Ofrendas

October 28 - November 11, 2005

Featured Artist: Luis DeLaTorre

One of Latino Arts' most popular events, the annual Day of the Dead exhibit is an artistically vibrant and emotionally moving expression of life, loss, and memory.

Every year, professional artists and neighborhood families gather at the Latino Arts Gallery to create special altars to honor the deceased, or to make their own artistic or political statements.

Many of the altars in this exhibit combine traditional elements: photographs, marigolds, food and drink, or mementos used by the departed. Others take on political issues, or pay tribute to famous figures (Frida Kahlo is a perennial favorite).

Ofrendas, as they are called, are created throughout Latin America - especially in Mexico - on the Day of the Dead as a way to celebrate the lives of those that have been lost. A mixture of Christian and indigenous traditions, the holiday is marked by pageantry, fireworks, and all-night vigils at cemeteries.

As is evident in the dancing skeletons captured in paper cutouts, or the colorful candy skulls given to children, death is regarded with humor, as a necessary and inevitable part of life.
